چکیده

Received (received date) Revised (revised date) A simple model is presented for the description of steady uniform shear ow of granular material. The model is based on a stress uctuation activated process. The basic idea is that shear between two particles layers induces uctuations in the media that may trigger a shear at some other position. Based on this idea a minimum model is derived and applied to diierent conngurations of granular shear ow.

Numerical Analysis of Granular Flows in a Silo Bed on Flow Regime Characterization

The flow characteristics of a gravity-driven dense granular flow in a granular bed with a contracted drainage orifice are studied by using discrete element method and quantitative analysis. Three values of discharging rates, ranging from fast to slow dense flows, are investigated. Time variations and derivatives of mean forces and velocities, as well as their respective correlations, are analyz...

A non-local rheology for dense granular flows.

A non-local theory is proposed to model dense granular flows. The idea is to describe the rearrangements occurring when a granular material is sheared as a self-activated process. A rearrangement at one position is triggered by the stress fluctuations induced by rearrangements elsewhere in the material. Within this framework, the constitutive law, which gives the relation between the shear rate...

A new constitutive law for dense granular flows

In many geophysical or industrial applications involving flows of grains, a continuum description would be of considerable help, for example in predicting natural hazards or in designing industrial processes. However, constitutive equations for dry granular flows are still matter of debates 1-10. One difficulty is that grains can behave like a solid (in a sand pile), a liquid (when poured from ...

Continuum approach to wide shear zones in quasistatic granular matter.

Slow and dense granular flows often exhibit narrow shear bands, making them ill suited for a continuum description. However, smooth granular flows have been shown to occur in specific geometries such as linear shear in the absence of gravity, slow inclined plane flows and, recently, flows in split-bottom Couette geometries. The wide shear regions in these systems should be amenable to a continu...

Velocity correlations in dense granular flows observed with internal imaging.

We show that the velocity correlations in uniform dense granular flows inside a silo are similar to the hydrodynamic response of an elastic hard-sphere liquid. The measurements are made using a fluorescent refractive-index-matched interstitial fluid in a regime where the flow is dominated by grains in enduring contact and fluctuations scale with the distance traveled, independent of flow rate. ...
